The Department of Primary Industries says the weekend’s cold, wet weather has slowed the surging locust population across Victoria.
The insects started swarming on Friday, with a small number reaching Melbourne.
Victoria’s Locust Controller, Russell McMurray, says the overcast weather provides a brief respite for landholders.
“The swarms will get slightly more intense – they were very, very low level density swarms that we experienced on Thursday night, Friday morning,” he said.
“That is the beginning of the swarms that we’ve been predicting will eventually hit Melbourne.
“They certainly will not swarm to the volume or density that they have the potential to do in the north of Victoria.”
