Australia: Locust Activity Steps Up

In Australasia, News Headlines

The Department of Primary Industries says locusts have started banding in areas of central Victoria.

The Tatura Incident Control Centre had four crews monitoring and surveilling at the weekend around Tatura, Dookie, Bendigo and Leaghur State Park.

Banding locusts were found in Leaghur State Park just south of Kerang and are scheduled to be sprayed on Wednesday.

The centre’s incident manager, David Brennan, says the spraying is set to increase in central Victoria.

“Up to date the activity has been out of the Mildura and the Horsham area and that’s largely based on the geographical area and that they’ve experienced some high temperatures,” he said.

“As the temperature heats up and north central experiences some of that warmer weather, we’ll notice an increase in locust activity.”
