Actress Daryl Hannah has been arrested outside the White House along with other environmental protesters who are opposing a planned oil pipeline from Canada to the US Gulf Coast.

The sit-in involved dozens demonstrating against the Keystone XL pipeline.

If it goes ahead, it would pass through six states – Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas – to refineries in Houston and Port Arthur, Texas.

Before the Kill Bill star was arrested, she said the protesters want to be free from the “death and destruction” that fossil fuels cause.

The group is calling for clean energy instead.

“There’s already a town in Missouri that runs on wind power that hasn’t been subjected to the energy price hikes,” said Hannah.

“They make more energy than they need. It works, it’s here, it’s available. President Obama promised us.

“That was his agenda and so far we haven’t seen any signs of that so we’re hoping that he will not bow to the lobbyists and make the right decision about US citizens.”

During the protest, the 50-year-old star sat down on the pavement near the White House and refused orders from US Park Police to move.

Hannah has been arrested for demonstrating over environmental causes in the past.
