The USGS said a magnitude-3.9 earthquake occurred at 3:09 p.m. Friday, about four miles northwest of Honoka’a, Hawai’i, and about seven miles below the Earth’s surface.

Makawao resident Rose Freitas said she was taking a nap with her cat curled up beside her when she heard her windows rattling. “My windows just shook, and my walls and the bed shook too,” she said. The sleeping cat leaped out of her bed and ran into another room. “She felt it too,” Freitas said.
