Haiti Cholera Death Toll Hits 643

THE toll in an outbreak of cholera in Haiti has surged to 643 deaths with nearly 10,000 people being treated in hospital for the disease, the public health ministry said today.

Yesterday alone, some 46 deaths were registered in the northern region of Artibonite, where the outbreak first occurred and where the town of Gonaives is situated, the ministry said.

In the Ouest region, where Port-au-Prince is situated, some 42 deaths have been recorded, although the toll in the capital itself remains at one confirmed death and 115 people admitted to hospital.
