AMBON, Indonesia, Sept. 1 (UPI) — A 5.3 earthquake rattled eastern Indonesia early Wednesday but there were no reports of injuries or damage, authorities said.

The epicenter was reported 55 miles northwest of the city of Ambon at a depth of 6 miles, the official Indonesian news agency Antara reported.

Ambon is located about 1,500 miles northeast of Jakarta.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the so-called “Ring of Fire” of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

The country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the country has experienced four temblors measuring magnitude 5 or greater on the Richter scale in the last week.
