Tropical Storm Julia nearing Cape Verde Islands

MIAMI – Forecasters say Tropical Storm Julia is nearing the southern Cape Verde Islands.

The National Hurricane Center said Julia is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south-southwest of the southernmost islands early Monday. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph).

Officials have issued a tropical storm warning for parts of the Cape Verde Islands, including Maio, Sao Tiago, Fogo and Brava.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, Hurricane Igor is moving west with maximum sustained winds near 150 mph (240 kph). The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Igor could become a Category 5 hurricane later in the day.

Igor is located about 940 miles (1,515 kilometers) east of the Northern Leeward Islands.
